Zambezi National Park is a protected area in Zimbabwe, situated near the iconic Victoria Falls. It’s a key part of the larger Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), a vast network of national parks and conservation areas across five countries.
Location and Access
Zambezi National Park is located just a few kilometers upstream from the town of Victoria Falls, making it a convenient destination for travelers. The main access road is the Zambezi River Game Drive, which runs parallel to the river. Another section of the park, the Chamabonda Vlei, offers a more remote and wild experience.
Wildlife
The park is known for its diverse wildlife, though its size means that sightings can be more intimate and less crowded than in larger parks.
- The “Big Four”: The park is home to four of the “Big Five”—elephant, lion, Cape buffalo, and leopard. The rhino is not present.
- General Game: You can commonly see large herds of sable antelope, eland, zebra, giraffe, greater kudu, and impala.
- Riverine Wildlife: The Zambezi River is a major draw for wildlife. You’ll frequently spot hippos and crocodiles in and along the water.
- Birds: With over 400 species recorded, the park is a birder’s paradise. Notable sightings include the African skimmer, Pel’s fishing owl, and Goliath heron.
Activities
The park offers a variety of activities to suit different interests, all of which provide a unique perspective on the landscape.
- Game Drives: These can be done in your own vehicle (self-drive) or with a professional guide. The Riverine Game Drive is popular for its high concentration of animals, while the Chamabonda Vlei offers a more solitary experience.
- Walking Safaris: Guided walking safaris with an armed professional are a fantastic way to get an up-close and personal view of the bush.
- River Activities: The Zambezi River provides opportunities for canoeing, boat safaris, and sunset cruises. These trips offer a chance to view wildlife from the water, often with a different perspective than from a vehicle.
- Fishing: The river is a renowned fishing destination, especially for the formidable tiger fish.
Accommodation
Accommodation options within the park cater to a range of budgets and preferences:
- Lodges: There are several exclusive and luxurious lodges located along the riverbanks, offering an all-inclusive safari experience with guided activities. Lodges include Batoka Zambezi Sands and Old Drift Lodge.
- Camping: The Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMPARKS) offers both developed and exclusive campsites. The minimum development sites are unfenced and provide a true wilderness experience for those who are self-sufficient.
Conservation
Zambezi National Park is a focus of conservation efforts by ZIMPARKS and various NGOs. These initiatives are aimed at protecting the park’s biodiversity through anti-poaching measures, habitat preservation, and community engagement.
