Step back in time and experience the rich cultural heritage of Zimbabwe at Old Bulawayo, the original royal capital established by King Lobengula in 1870 following the death of his father, King Mzilikazi, founder of the Ndebele Nation. Located just outside Bulawayo, this important historical attraction offers visitors a unique glimpse into the traditions, architecture, and way of life of the Ndebele people during the 19th century.
The layout of Old Bulawayo reflects the complex social and cultural structure of the Ndebele Kingdom. After occupying the site for 11 years, King Lobengula relocated his capital in 1881 to the area that would later become the modern city of Bulawayo, ordering the original settlement to be destroyed by fire.
Recognising its historical significance, the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe reconstructed Old Bulawayo as a living heritage and educational centre in 1998. Visitors can explore reconstructed features including King Lobengula’s Palace, traditional beehive huts, a cattle kraal, wagon shed, outer palisade, and an informative Interpretive Centre that brings the history of the Ndebele Kingdom to life.
Although a devastating bushfire in 2010 destroyed much of the reconstructed settlement, ongoing restoration efforts continue to preserve and rebuild this important cultural landmark. Today, Old Bulawayo remains one of Zimbabwe’s most significant historical attractions, offering educational tours, cultural insights, photography opportunities, and a deeper understanding of the nation’s heritage.
Whether you are a history enthusiast, student, researcher, cultural traveller, or tourist exploring Bulawayo, Old Bulawayo is a must-visit destination that connects visitors with the origins of one of Southern Africa’s most influential kingdoms.
