Umfurudzi Park is a vast, scenic wilderness where history, wildlife, and dramatic landscapes collide. It’s a park for those who love adventure off the beaten path. Unlike more commercialized reserves, Umfurudzi offers a raw, intimate safari experience. The star attraction is the chance to track the critically endangered black rhinoceros on foot with an armed guide—a truly heart-pounding privilege.

Key Attractions & Activities:

  • Black Rhino Tracking: The park’s flagship experience. Guided walks offer a rare opportunity to approach these prehistoric giants in their natural habitat. (Mandatory to book with a park ranger).
  • 4×4 Game Drives: Explore a network of sandy tracks through miombo woodlands and along the Hunyani River. Self-drive is an option, but guided drives unlock the best sightings. Spot elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and a variety of antelope.
  • Hiking & Walking Trails: Lace up your boots! The rugged terrain of the Shawanga Hills and trails to spots like the Mermaid’s Pool offer stunning views and a real sense of exploration.
  • Birdwatching Haven: With over 300 species, bring your binoculars. The riverine forests are alive with the calls of kingfishers, fish eagles, and hornbills.
  • History at Your Feet: Discover ancient San Bushmen rock art, a silent testament to the area’s earliest inhabitants.
  • River Fishing: Cast a line in the Hunyani River for bream and tigerfish—a perfect way to relax in the afternoon.

Practical Information You Need to Know:

Accommodation:

  • Lukosi Main Camp: Offers basic but functional self-catering lodges and campsites. You’ll need to bring all your own food, drinking water, and supplies.
  • Bush Campsites: For the truly adventurous, remote campsites offer incredible solitude. Basic long-drop toilets are the norm; you must be fully self-sufficient.
  • Private Lodges: A few smaller, privately-run lodges offer a more inclusive (and comfortable) experience with meals and game drives. Book well in advance.

Getting There & Around:

  • Location: Roughly 2.5 – 3 hours’ drive from Harare. The final access is via Shamva.
  • Vehicle: A sedan can be used however a 4X4 VEHICLE IS ESSENTIAL in the rainy season. The internal roads are sandy, rocky, and can become impassable for 2WD vehicles, especially after rain. Don’t even think about attempting it without one.
  • Fuel: There are no fuel stations in the park. Fill up your tank and any extra jerry cans in Shamva or Bindura before you enter.

Best Time to Visit:

  • May – October (Dry Season): Ideal for wildlife. Animals gather at the river and waterholes, making them easier to spot. The weather is cooler, and roads are in the best condition.
  • November – April (Wet Season): The park is lush and green, excellent for birding and photography. However, wildlife is more scattered, and the 4×4 roads can be very challenging. Some areas may be inaccessible.

Essential Tips & Booking:

  • Book in Advance: Especially for rhino tracking and accommodation. Contact the Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Authority (ZimParks) or your chosen private lodge directly.
  • Self-Sufficiency is Key: Bring all your own food, water, drinks, and firewood. There are no shops.
  • Park Fees: Remember to pay your ZimParks conservation fees at the gate upon entry.
  • Connectivity: Assume you will have no cell phone signal for most of your stay. Embrace the digital detox and inform family of your plans beforehand.
